Passive Fire Protection (PFP) Explanation

Passive fire protection is a form of fire safety provision that is ‘built-in’ to the fabric of the building to restrict the growth and spread of fire and smoke.

It does this by controlling the flammability of the wall and ceiling linings; dividing the building up into fire-resisting compartments; providing protection to the structure of the building to prevent its collapse; and providing protective routes for escape of occupants.

Passive fire protection products include fire doors, fire resisting walls, floors, ceilings, fire-resisting ducts and dampers, fire stopping and fire protection to structural members.

The purpose of passive fire protection is to contain the spread of fire for sufficient time to permit the safe evacuation of all occupants of the premises and the arrival of the fire brigade. The person responsible for fire safety also has a duty of care towards any members of the emergency services, e.g. fire fighters, who may have to enter the premises during the course of a fire; in slowing the spread of flames, smoke and hot gases, passive fire protection also serves to ensure the building remains as safe as possible for entry in this situation.

Our fire safety officers have specific qualifications in inspection of PFP and in particular Fire Stopping. Apart from at initial design of a building, there are many occasions when the PFP can become compromised by works that are ongoing within the building, the most common examples of these are:

  • During Construction

  • When a building is being renovated or extended

  • When building use is changed

  • When a one building is converted into several properties

  • During general maintenance work that involves wall or floor penetrations
